How has the bad economy effected the trading card and sports memorabilia industry?

Tommy12oz asked:

I stooped collecting almost two years ago when pricing for packs of cards were getting out of control. So for anyone out there who is still collecting have prices on current and past cards come down dramatically? I am thinking maybe its a good time to start picking up some older tops baseball cards if they are cheaper now

I would say that nothing has happened yet. The market for cards doesn’t move around every day like the stock market. On the whole, a slow economy equals less disposable income and more motivated selling. This will drive prices down, of course. However, in bear markets, people tend to lose faith in traditional investments. Nontraditional investments tend to gain some favor as people search in vain for a place to put their money. Rare coins had a massive run-up in price in the late 70s as a long bear market in stocks played out.

So overall, most lower-priced cards will probably dip in price some, but not the real icons of the hobby like the T206 Wagner, 1933 Goudey Ruths, or Mickey Mantle rookies.

Learning to buy quality stuff and not overpay is much more important than trying to time the market, however.

The economy hasn’t affected it, the card company’s greed has affected it.

I don’t collect cards anymore either. You pay three bucks and you get 8 commons not worth a quarter. It’s all about trying to get the big insert, so you end up paying hundreds of dollars and you may end up with a collection of cards worth 50. They put out so much stuff it’s impossible to collect anything and everythign completely loses its value in a couple years so stuff you pay up the nose for now isn’t worth anything in five years, I have no idea why anyone falls for it still.

Yes. I can’t think of any industry the weak economy hasn’t affected.

Everything is becoming more expensive, so buying this that are not a need but rather a want isn’t on many minds of americans.
